How to Care for an Orchid
With their elegant posture and long-lasting blooms, orchids are among the most beloved houseplants. With the right care they stay vibrant for months and even bloom again. As someone who has worked with flowers for many years, I have gathered the key tips to keep your orchid healthy.
Light and Placement
Orchids love bright but indirect light. Direct midday sun can scorch the leaves, so a windowsill facing east or north is ideal. Dark green leaves mean the plant needs more light, while yellowish leaves mean it is getting too much sun.
Watering
Overwatering is the most common mistake. Orchid roots need air and will rot in constantly wet conditions. Usually watering once a week with lukewarm water, when the pot feels light, is enough. Water at the roots and never leave water on the flowers or leaves.
Humidity and Temperature
A temperature of 18-25°C and 50-70% humidity is ideal for orchids. Keep the plant away from radiators and air-conditioning vents. In dry rooms, wiping the leaves with a damp cloth or placing a bowl of water nearby helps.
Care After Blooming
When the flowers fade, prune the stem just above the second node from the bottom; new buds often appear on the same stem. Repot once a year with a special orchid mix after flowering ends.
With these simple steps your orchid will keep you company for a long time. Sending an orchid to your loved ones is an elegant, lasting and meaningful message of affection.
